The Grand Cinema…it’s more than movies

11 Jun

Did you know that you could celebrate your next birthday at the Grand Cinema AND have a movie theater all to yourself?  I am serious, the Grand Cinema has hosted many birthday parties this year ranging from a 4-year-old celebration to a 60-year-old celebration!  Both of which were a hit with the birthday crowd.

This is such a fun and unique way to celebrate a birthday.  Most birthday parties start around 9a on a Saturday or Sunday morning (it can be lots of fun to have a pajama party).  You can watch a movie and then use the lower lobby for an additional hour to celebrate with cake and open presents!  The cost is only $150 and you can invite LOTS of people since our theater #4 holds approximately 70 people and the lower lobby can seat 40-50 comfortably around tables (you throw in a bunch of guests standing and you are good to go).

Personally,  I think the best part is you don’t have to clean your house to get ready for a birthday party!  For more information contact the Grand Cinema @ 253-572-6062 or leave us a message here.

Quiet Shoes – local film premiere

27 May

Saturday, June 19, 2010

7:00 pm

at the Rialto Theater

Produced over a four-year period in and around Tacoma by local filmmaking talent Isaac Olsen, in conjunction with Kurt Kendall (both veterans and award winners for multiple years in the Grand Cinema’s 72 Hour Film Contest), “Quiet Shoes” is an independent feature-length film noir comedy. A visual feast with a hilarious twist, this film will leave you rolling in the aisles.

Filmmed on less than a shoe-string budget with imaginative effects and designs, all created by local talent (including members of local rock legends, Girl Trouble), “Quiet Shoes” tells the story of Rick Savage: gambler… loner… boob, a down-on-his-luck gumshoe destined for failure; that is until he acquires a new pair of shoes. The shoes will take him down a path littered with mysterious strangers, dead-end leads, the sound of gunfire, and the stench of something very, very fishy. The bodies are starting to pile up. Can Savage solve this case before the next one on the pile is his?! He’d better; he still has overdue library books to return and the fines are outrageous!

The “Quiet Shoes” World Movie Premiere is an event not to be missed by anyone with a love for the film noir genre, wacky comedy, and Tacoma.

Tickets are $12 (general seating) or $11 for Grand Cinema members, and are available online at www.schnelluloid.com and at the Grand Cinema box office.

The Last Campaign of Governor Booth Gardner

27 May

The Grand Cinema annually plays many films that receive Academy Award nominations. We are happy to announce another such film, though this one is rather special for us. On Sunday, June 6th at 2:30 p.m. the Grand will host a one-time only screening of the Oscar-nominated documentary short film, The Last Campaign of Governor Booth Gardner. Because the film has not officially been released yet, this sneak preview of the film will be the first time that it has screened in Tacoma.

Booth Gardner served as Washington’s governor from 1985 to 1993. Soon after his retirement he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that progressively impairs speech and motor skills. Gardner later spearheaded the 2008 passage of Washington’s Death With Dignity Act which allows for terminally ill patients to request and self-administer lethal medication prescribed by a physician. The Last Campaign of Governor Booth Gardner tracks Gardner over the final weeks leading up to the Act’s 2008 election, following the debates and the toll they took on Gardner’s health. This 38 minute film was one of five short films nominated for the 2010 Academy Award for Documentary Short.

Following the screening, a discussion will be held in the theater. The filmmaker is anticipated to be in attendance to participate in the conversation. Because seating is limited, people are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance, either in person at the Grand Cinema or through our website at www.grandcinema.com. Stadnard admission prices apply with discounts for students, seniors, military and members of the Grand.

Catching up on Cannes

27 May

It’s hard to believe that The Grand Goes to Cannes tris has come and gone!! I’ve been back home since late Sunday night (after a nightmarish 26 hour travel “day” that consisted of 3 flights, 2 2+ hour layovers, and only about 45 minutes of sleep), and am only now feeling back to normal. The trip was the definition of whirlwind, and I still have to remind myself that I actually went! It was like a dream every day I was there, and I feel so lucky to have gone.

During the last two days of the trip, I was unable to access the internet – most of the Palais festival area was becoming more and more empty, and most people took off prior to the festival’s last weekend. Let me recap my last couple days in Cannes:

I finally saw a film that I genuinely enjoyed – “Life, Above All” – from South Africa, and tells the story of a young girl whose baby sister has just passed away, and is now dealing with surfacing rumors about her mother’s supposed battle with AIDS. It was told so beautifully, and with such impressive subtletly, that it stayed on my mind long after I left the theater. After being in the 1,200 seat theater (!!) for a sunny afternoon, I was ready to hit some of the shops, and explore the winding streets of Cannes a bit more. After some great finds at a couple boutiques, and a very necessary purchase at the local chocolatier, I settled at a small cafe for dinner with my new friend, Jo. It was amazing to me how busy the streets were so late at night. Those Cannes locals sure do know how to have fun!

The last full day turned out to be quite memorable — between the delicious Haagen Dazs ice cream, dinner with Jo and her friends at BBC Films – one of the best meals of my life, and witnessing a wardrobe malfunction on the red carpet – I have yet to figure out who she was, but this young actress can now put one of the most embarrassing moments of her life behind her.

Sunday morning, I caught the shuttle to the Nice airport and sadly sad goodbye to Cannes and my first experience with the film business’ largest stage. I can honestly say it was an incredibly valuable experience in so many ways, and I can’t wait to go back.
